Today it’s no secret what you should be doing to maintain a healthy great hair and interestedly enough most are quite knowledgable in this arena yet are not consistent enough in their routine to see results. So I’ve made a stupid simple list of things to adopt on a weekly basis. I’ve boiled my hit list down to 7 easy tips you can incorporate in your day to day to in order to cultivate and maintain shiny strong hair. Some of which you may already be doing and if that’s the case power to ya.
My Hit List For Great Hair
1. Take Biotin
This is something a gal should be taking everyday. I take mine with breakfast along with fish oils and multi vitamins. Biotin helps support the health of your hair, skin and nails and interestingly enough, there is strong evidence that a deficiency of biotin can cause hair loss. So take your gosh darn biotin everyday!
2. Eat More Protein
This is so important not just for your luscious locks but overall health. During college, I fell extremely ill, couldn’t eat and lost a great deal of my hair. What promoted my hair growth back? Protein & Omega-3s! Trust me. Add eggs, fish or lean protein to every meal, if possible. Here is preview into my daily nutrition:
- Breakfast – Two eggs + Banana
- Morning Snack – Spinach, + Blue Berries + Almond Milk + Vega Protein Smoothie
- Lunch – Chicken Arugula Salad with Almonds and Avocado
- Afternoon Snack – Apples & Almond Butter
- Dinner – Lean Protein/ Fish + Veggies
3. Don’t wash your Hair
Natural oils my friend. My biggest secret of all would be… well just not washing my hair. I’ll go 2-3 sometimes 4/5 days post blow out without shampooing or conditioning my hair. Relax guys… I shower and put my hair in a morning after shower cap from the DryBar. Less frequent washes keep you from stripping your hair of all those natural oils and quite honestly just looks better. Give it a try!
4. Dry Shampoo is your friend
Around day 3/ 4 of the grease fest I’ll start to utilize my friend detox. Couldn’t live without this stuff if I tried. I’ve tested a couple of different brands from CVS and Sephora. My all time favorite would have to be from the Dry Bar and runner up would be Bumble and Bumble. They have them for both blondes and brunettes – it’s easy to use, long lasting results and smells so good!
5. Hair Masks Once a week
Two options when it comes to hair masks because you can really get sucked into different brands and steps and it gets confusing so I’ve bubbled it down to two:
- If you are on a budget, I’d recommend a DYI hair mask. It’s as easy as a tablespoon of coconut oil, a full dropper of argan oil, mixed in a bowl. Soak your hair with that homemade concoction over night and shampoo and condition in the morning & vaulá shine-a-rama.
- If you can splurge a little more for your hair I’d recommend Kérastase products. They are simply the best. The Elixer Ultime – Masque is the best. My hairdresser recommended it to me and it’s been a game changer ever since.
6. Invest in a Quality Shampoo & Conditioner
Not to sound like a broken record here but the best of the best is Kérastase. I’m telling ya your hair will thank you after a couple weeks of using this stuff. This stuff moisturizes and leaves your hair feeling so purified in the process. Make sure to concentrate your shampoo near the scalp where most of the oils and product residue build up and be sure to rinse your conditioned noggin’ with cold water. The colder the better – it will lock in all those nutrients adding pretty radiance and shine!
7. Brush your Hair and Do it right
Most folks don’t think about this one. Growing up I’d yank the shit out of my hair in order to work the knots out. My mom would always preach “brush bottom up Jennifer!” but of course my younger self rebelled and alas, my poor damaged hair. Lesson learned Carol. Gotta to be gentle on the noggin and hair and invest the time to brush it right. You should be brushing your scalp to rejuvenate the little hair follicles and get the blood flowin’. Give the drybar brush a try. Basically this helps stimulate growth, makes the baby follicles healthier and in turn means healthier stronger hair.
Tip & Trick: Before the shower, section your dry hair and brush from bottom to top and don’t forget about your scalp!
